The most repeated phrase in the book of Ezekiel is this: ”The word of the Lord came to me, saying—” This phrase is an introduction to a prophetic word spoken to the prophet from the Lord God.
Throughout the chapters, over and over again, we are told that God speaks a message directly to his servant.
Within these messages, God speaks of his will for his people and those who are not his own. He tells his plans for astonishing rewards and frightening punishments.
What Ezekiel heard was not only a message from God, but he heard from God himself. Throughout the scripture, God uses angels, miracles, creatures (both earthly and heavenly), and more to communicate with humans.
But the greatest spokesperson for God is God himself. Here is the great revelation: the word that kept coming and speaking to Ezekiel was Jesus, who is the word of God.
Before Jesus was born, lived, died and rose, he was God. Think of all that Jesus did which his disciples recorded: his preaching, teaching, healing the sick, raising the dead, feeding the hungry, attending the oppressed, blessing the children, rebuking those who thought themselves to be wise, and forgiving all types of sin.
This revelation is meant to give us the ability to see Jesus in every story written in the Bible, every Commandment spoken, every song song, and every vision that was recorded. Jesus was not merely waiting for his birth to begin his ministry and involvement with us. This is the Jesus that was the same yesterday as he is today.
The glory of the early church was the gift of seeing Jesus in all of the Old Testament. We need the same gift.
We should cry out for the same word that kept coming and speaking to Ezekiel to speak to us; and that we would follow, not just the message, but the one speaking: Jesus Christ, the Living Word.
